Washington: The US government is all set to recognize 1300 same sex  marriages which were performed in Utah during a brief window, despite the state government's decision not to do the same.

The announcement was made by Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday.

The federal district court  On Dec. 20  ruled that Utah's ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional.

But last week, the U.S. Supreme Court put a halt to same-sex marriages in the state at least until the 10th Circuit Court hears the appeal. Utah announced two days ago that it did not consider the marriages legal.

Holder's announcement on Friday clarified that those couples will, for now, be afforded the federal benefits married couples receive.

Hours after this announcement, a large crowd of gay marriage supporters crowded inside the state Capitol on Friday calling on Republican Gov. Gary Herbert to do the same.
