Lisbon, Portugal, Dec 19: Hundreds of volunteers gathered in Lisbon's main square on Saturday to make a giant star out of candles to raise money for a Portuguese charity.
Organisers said the event was to raise funds for disabled children and elderly people in need.
It was also an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest star made out of candles.
Volunteers started constructing the star on Saturday afternoon in the Praca do Comercio, by the Tagus river.
Many people queued up to buy candles for the star at 1 euro each. Others had bought them online beforehand.
It took four hours for the volunteers to light all the candles.
The charity "A Terra dos Sonhos" (Land of Dreams), who organised the event, said the star had raised more than 50-thousand euros (65-thousand US dollars).
Organisers also claimed to have broken the world record, saying the star was made out of at least 50-thousand candles, beating the previous record of a 37-thousand candle-star made in Pakistan.
The evening ended in a spectacular firework show.
