New Delhi: Nafisa Joseph was born and brought up in Bangalore. Her father was a Keralite Syrian Christian and mother Usha Joseph a Bengali. She was raised as a Catholic but owed her Islamic first name to the fact that her paternal grandmother was Muslim.
She was the youngest participant at the Miss India pageant in 1997, which she won. Later she participated in the Miss Universe Pageant in Miami, Florida on May 16, 1997, and was among the 10 semifinalists in the pageant.
But the journey of this diva ended on July 29, 2004, when she hanged herself at her flat in Versova in Mumbai.
Nafisa's parents told reporters the model ended her life after her wedding with businessman Gautam Khanduja was called off.
According to media reports, Nafisa Joseph discovered that Khanduja was still married and not divorced as he had claimed.
