Karachi: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today arrived in Pakistan for a three-day official visit, his first trip to the country after assuming the office in January.
Sirisena arrived in Karachi this afternoon and was greeted by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at the airport. Later he flew to Islamabad. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif greeted him at Islamabad airport.
During Sirisena's visit, the two sides will sign a number of Memorandum of Understandings and agreements to promote bilateral cooperation in various sectors with focus on trade.
The Foreign Ministry had said the Sri Lankan Presidentwas invited on the state visit by President Mamnoon Hussain who had earlier this year visited Sri Lanka.
Sirisena will meet President Hussain, who is scheduled to host a state banquet in his honour, whereas Nawaz will hold official talks with him on Monday.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy friendly and cordial relations. Diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1948.
