Bangladesh: Nine held over lawyer's murder linked to Hindu priest Chinmoy Das arrest

The police stated nine of the accused were arrested, while a manhunt to nab the others was underway.

In a significant development, at least nine people have been arrested in connection to the murder of a Bangladeshi lawyer during violence in the country's southeastern port city of Chattogram. According to the information released, the accused were part of a group of 46 people, mostly cleanliness workers belonging to the minority Hindu community, against whom the case has been filed by the Bangladeshi police in connection to the killing of assistant public prosecutor Saiful Islam earlier during clashes between security personnel and followers of Hindu community leader Chinmoy Krishna Das after the latter was denied bail and sent to jail by a Chattogram court.

About the arrest

The police stated that the arrests were made after the accused were identified through CCTV footage of the court premises and the scene of the violence on November 26. They mentioned most of the accused were residents of the city’s Sebok Colony, a place where most of the cleanliness workers belonging to the Hindu community live. 

"Saiful Islam's father filed the case last night, naming 46 people. From which nine of the accused were arrested and a manhunt to nab the others was underway,” Abdul Karim, the officer in charge of the port city’s Kotwali police station, said.

Further, the official also elaborated on the details regarding the primary accused, identified as Chandan Das. He mentioned, based on the evidence, that Das was seen chopping the lawyer with a sharp weapon.

Nationwide outrage emerged

Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that in the aftermath of the gruesome murder of the Bangladeshi lawyer Saiful Islam, a nationwide outrage has emerged in the country with lawyers and political groups taking to the streets demanding stern punitive actions against Islam's killers. Some of the groups have also called for a complete ban on ISKCON Bangladesh; however, the trust in its statement clarified that Chinmoy Krishna Das was expelled from the organization long before his arrest and added that ISKCON was not involved in the murder or violence.
