Philippines earthquake: Mindanao region felt massive tremors of 6.9 magnitude

According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres.

An earthquake of 6.9 magnitude struck the Mindanao, Philippines region on Friday. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles). 
As of writing this article, there are no reports of any injuries or casualties.

According to the statement released by the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was Sarangani and there were no threats of Tsunami.

In its evaluation report, USGS says

  • There is no tsunami danger for the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia, or Alaska. 
  • Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, 
  • The earthquake is not expected to generate a tsunami. 

Notably, the Philippines experiences regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean.
