Kuala Lumpur: A Malaysian court today ruled that henceforth non-Muslims cannot use the word “Allah” to refer to God.

In a landmark judgement, the Court of Appeal prohibited a Christian newspaper from using the word ‘Allah'.

The Court of Appeal allowed the government's appeal to set aside the 2009 decision of a High Court which had allowed the newspaper to use the word ‘Allah' to refer to God.

The High Court had declared four years ago that the decision by the home ministry prohibiting the newspaper ‘The Herald' from using the word “Allah” was illegal, null and void.

This ruling led to attacks and vandalism at churches in Malaysia.
