Kathmandu: The Nepali Congress emerged as the single largest party in elections to Nepal's second Constituent Assembly winning 105 of the 240 seats under the first-past-the-post category results of which were finally declared Monday.

The Nepali Congress (NC) was followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) with 92 seats, the Election Commission of Nepal said.

The NC had won just 37 seats in the 2008 elections, while the CPN-UML had won 30.

Counting for the second category -- proportional representation -- was underway.

Elections to the Constituent Assembly were held under two categories -- first-past-the-post and proportional representation. A total of 240 seats were allocated in the first category and 365 seats in the proportional representation category.

The remaining 26 seats in the 601-member will be nominated by the Cabinet later.

The United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), the party that had emerged winner with 120 seats in the 2008 elections, got a drubbing this time. It won only 26 seats.
