Know how Mohammed Ali Jinnah secretly married his wife and later separated

New Delhi: Pakistan's Father of the Nation Mohammed Ali Jinnah had a personal life which was vastly different from his political persona. Jinnah was never forgiven by the Congress for bringing about the Partition of India, while the people of Pakistan see him as an idol.We will now take you through his persona as a lover, who loved a girl whole heartedly and later married her. The girl's name was Ratanbai Petit. Jinnah met Ratanbai in Darjeeling in 1916 when both of them were on a vacation. It was wonderful summer time in Darjeeling in 1916 while Jinnah was on vacation there.Ratanbai Petit was the daughter of Dinshaw Petit. She was famous in Bombay circles for her beauty and open minded attitude. She was called “Nightingale of Bombay” and was considered to be more mature than girls of her age.Jinnah was enamored of her beauty and charm and Ruttie fell for his personality. They immediately fell in love upon meeting at Darjeeling. At that time, Jinnah was 40 and Rattanbai was only 16.Dinshaw Petit was a good friend of Jinnah. While taking dinner, Jinnah asked her father on his views about inter-communal marriages. Dinshaw Petit replied that he had no issue with such marriages. Without any hesitation, Jinnah immediately asked for his approval to marry with his daughter. Dinshaw was taken aback and he refused it bluntly. This incidence ended their friendship.Not only was this the end of the friendship between the two men, but Sir Dinshaw forbade Ruttie to meet Jinnah as long as she lived under his roof. As she was still a minor, the law was on his side but Ruttie and Jinnah met in secret anyway, and decided to wait out the two years until she attained the age of maturity.Shortly after her eighteenth birthday, Rattanbai converted to Islam and adopted the name Mariam. Two months later, on April 19, 1918, they were married at his house South Court in Bombay. The wedding ring which Jinnah gave Ruttie was a present from the Raja of Mahmudabad. The Raja and a few close friends of Jinnah were the only guests at the wedding, and later the couple spent part of their honeymoon at the Mahmudabad palace in Nainital. The rest of their honeymoon was spent at the Maidens Hotel, a magnificent property just beyond the Red Fort.Ruttie gave birth to Jinnah's first and only child, a daughter named Dina, in 1919.By 1928 Jinnah's busy political career had taken a toll on his marriage. He and Ruttie separated. Ruttie lived as a recluse at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay for the next year, until she died on her 29th birthday.
