He was born in 1939 to a Kabyle family from Guenzet and grew up near Algiers at Saint-Eugene (Bologhine).
He served in the French colonial army before defecting to the nationalist revolt when it began in the 1950s.
He joined the National Liberation Army in 1961 and got trained at at a KGB school.
