Know about a ghost town in Africa abandoned since 50 years

New Delhi: Kolmanskop in Namibia was founded in 1908 when a railway worker, Zacharias Lewala discovered a diamond in this place and showed it to his supervisor, who then got the gem tested and approved.After the discovery, a large number of German miners began to settle here and declared Kolmanskop as “Sperrgebiet” (meaning prohibited area).Hundreds of German miners flocked to the place and wanted to try their luck. These migrants became wealthy due to diamond mining and built the town in the German architectural style.With such wealth, they began to build hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theatre and sport-hall, casino, ice factory and the first x-ray-station in the southern hemisphere, as well as the first tram in Africa. But as the price of diamonds began to drop after World War One the town began to deteriorate, particularly after richer diamonds were found further south and it was abandoned in 1954. Since then, it has been a place for tourists and photographers. The sand dunes lie inside the vacant buildings and creepy materials can be found in the remains. The mining company De Beers set up a museum in 1980 to preserve some of the history of Kolmanskop. Now tourists come to see the restored buildings and walk around the eerie abandoned homes. The place has been a topic of discussion in various paranormal series.
