Then dare to go to this hotel in Texas which has been tagged ‘haunted' since 1972.The 14 storey Baker hotel is in Mineral Wells, Texas. Opened in 1929, the hotel was a spa destination, mineral baths, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a rooftop nightclub known as the Cloud Room.It was a happening place till the 1930s and the business bloomed. But after the stock market crash, the hotel was in losses.In 1972, the Baker closed its doors for the last time and though several groups have made offers to rehabilitate the structure (the most recent in 2008), the building sits vacant and deteriorating from the ravages of nature and constant threats of vandalism.Among the celebrities who stayed at the Baker were Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Roy Rogers and the Three Stooges. Why is it haunted?Reports suggest that a woman had committed suicide in the hotel, the ghost of which roams in the hotel.Report suggests she was the mistress of the hotel manager; others say she was Baker's mistress. Legend has it, she jumped to her death from the top of the hotel.One maid reported finding glasses with red lipstick marks on them in the seventh-floor suite where the woman had once stayed.Nobody else had been in the room. Guests have reported smelling the woman's lavender-scented perfume on the seventh floor.Another ghost was seen in the basement and believed to be the ghost of Douglas Moore.In 1948, he began working at the Baker Hotel as an elevator operator and became involved in a prostitution ring.His mother urged him to quite his job and reports the illegal goings on.Weeks later, upon being invited to return to work he mysteriously died in an 'accident' involving the elevator in which his body was sliced in half at the waist.Only the ghost's head and upper body have been seen.Plans were announced in August 2010 for Hunter Chase Private Equity to purchase and reopen the Baker with a proposed renovation budget of $54 million.Austin film director Kevin Pruitt grew up in Mineral Wells and is producing a documentary focusing on the unique history & characters of Mineral Wells as well as the Baker Hotel's rise, demise, and much-anticipated present-day restoration.
