New York: Manhattan's feisty Federal US Attorney Preet Bharara aka Preetinder Singh Bharara was born in Ferozepur, Punjab to a Sikh father and a Hindu mother and is now a naturalised US citizen. He has prosecuted several Indians in the past.
On Thursday, Bharara issued a detailed rejoinder justifying the shocking treatment meted out to Indian deputy consul general Devyani Khobragade in the case involving her maid Sangeeta Richard.
Bharara questioned why India was silent over the treatment meted out to her maid compared to the outrage over the arrest of Khobragade, her employer.
He says, there has been “much misinformation and factual inaccuracy” in reporting on the issue.
Bharara alleged, Devyani Khobragade not only broke US law, but also forced her maid and the maid's spouse to be part of her scheme to lie to US government officials.
“One wonders whether any government would not take action regarding false documents being submitted to it in order to bring immigrants into the country.
"One wonders even more pointedly whether any government would not take action regarding that alleged conduct where the purpose of the scheme was to unfairly treat a domestic worker in ways that violate the law.
