New Delhi: A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled New Zealand on Monday, halting train services and knocking merchendises off shelves, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The quake was widely felt in Wellington.

No one was hurt when a giant eagle used in the Lord of the Rings crashed at Wellington Airport.

A police central communications spokesman said no major damage was reported in the city.

A giant eagle suspended from the ceiling at Wellington Airport came down during the tremor. Nobody was hurt, an airport spokesman said. The area was cordoned off.

Tranz Metro has suspended all train services in Wellington.

Heather Gowans and her partner Adrian Tutauha live in Solway, Masterton, about 40 kilometres from the quake centre.

According to sources, members of Indian cricket team, who are in NZ, were safe.
