CII should be abolished: Pak civil society
Islamabad: Pakistan's civil society members today slammed the Council of Islamic Ideology as “barbaric, medieval and cruel” after the constitutional body issued a controversial ruling saying a man does not need his wife's consent for
“Civil Society networks, human rights activists, NGOs, students, academicians and those working for Pakistan's wellbeing, have expressed total outrage at the barbaric, medieval, cruel, misogynist and inhuman mindset demonstrated by the shocking pronouncements,” the statement said.
It demanded an urgent Constitutional Amendment by a joint sitting of Parliament to abolish the CII altogether.
The statement said Sheerani must immediately be removed from his post as CII chairperson and women scholars, judges and lawyers should replace retrogressive members of the body.
“The CII's retrogressive members must immediately be replaced by progressives, including 50 per cent women scholars, judges and lawyers; as well as 5 per cent non-Muslim citizens of Pakistan, who are impacted by the CII's advice,” the statement said.
