Kathmandu, Jul 4: At least 50 people have been killed and 12,000 others displaced across Nepal due to landslides and floods triggered by incessant rain over the past three weeks, the government said today.  “Landslides and floods have so far killed 50 people in different parts of the country,” a Home Ministry statement said.

Nineteen people are still missing and efforts to rescue them have so far failed, an official at the Ministry said.  The southern plains and the western hill areas have been mainly affected by the natural disaster during this monsoon season.

Nearly 12,000 people have been displaced and some 900 houses have been completely destroyed by the disaster, the ministry said.

Over 1,000 livestock have also died due to the floods and landslides, according to the official.

The government has so far distributed Rs 9.2 million (USD 90,000) to the victims of the disaster, he said.

The disaster struck at the same time as the recent deadly floods in neighbouring Uttarakhand in India.
