Know the Papua New Guinea tribe where human flesh is a delight

New Delhi: Those who eat humans are known as cannibals. Cannibals have existed on earth since early times.From animals to humans they can eat anything. Eating their own people is a custom of their community.They don't eat raw flesh, they invariably either boil, roast or smoke it.In his 1931 book Jungle Ways, American adventurer and journalist William Buehler Seabrook provided the world's most detailed written description of the taste of human flesh. Seabrook noted that, in raw form, human meat looks like beef, but slightly less red, with pale yellow fat. When roasted, the meat turned grayish, as would lamb or veal, and smelled like cooked beef. As for the taste, Seabrook wrote, “It was so nearly like good, fully developed veal that I think no person with a palate of ordinary, normal sensitiveness could distinguish it from veal.”Though earlier there were many tribes around the world, where cannibalism was a practice but with the development many of such tribes are extinct now. The only tribe which still practises cannibalism is the Korowai tribe in south-eastern Papua.They are also known as Kolufu. They are the only living humans who still eat human flesh. They live in the south-eastern part of the western part of the New Guinea. There are about 3000 Korowai people still living in these areas and before 1970's they were unaware of the fact that there was life besides themselves.The Korowai tribe are direct neighbours of the Asmat and live north of the Dairam Kabiur. Their habitat is limited by two large rivers and the mountains in the north. Their swampy area is approximately 600 sq km. In this difficult area live nearly 2500 Korowai in small family groups. The Korowai are hunters and collectors. They nourish themselves mainly with Sago which they won from Sago palms. They take their main protein food from the larvae of the Capricorn beetle. The huntable animals represent their further base of life. There are wild pigs; Casuar bird; birds; snakes; and small insects. Vegetable food is also very important for them. Especially palm leaves, fern, breadfruit and the red pandanae fruit.Anthropologists suspect that cannibalism is no longer practised by the Korowai clans that have had frequent contact with outsiders. Recent reports suggest that certain clans have been coaxed into encouraging tourism by perpetuating the myth that it is still an active practice.In 2006, the television show 60 Minutes claimed that when someone in Korowai society is convicted of being a culprit in some miss deed he or she is tried, and if convicted he or she is tortured, executed, and eaten.Other unverified claims were made that the brain is usually eaten immediately, while still warm, and that pregnant women and children don't participate in the cannibal act.Native of the African Congo are also suspected of practicing the cannibalism.Nearly all the tribes in the Congo Basin either are or have been cannibals; and among some of them the practice is on the increase. Races who until lately do not seem to have been cannibals, though situated in a country surrounded by cannibal races, have, from increased intercourse with their neighbours, learned to eat human flesh.Here different tribes prefer various parts of the human body. Some cut long steaks from the flesh of the thighs, legs or arms; others prefer the hands and feet; and the great majority do not eat the head.
