Know about the cemetery in Mexico where bones of the dead are taken out for cleaning

New Delhi: You might have heard about the Day of the Dead in Mexico, a day meant to remember friends and family who are no more. The day is celebrated by eating favorite foods of the departed souls. Sugar skulls, marigolds, beverages and a whole feast are eaten as a token of remembrance. However, there is a cemetery in Campeche, Mexico where the remembrance of the dead goes even further.The bones of the dead are taken out for cleaning each year by the family, friends or loved ones. It's a ritual of taking out bones and cleanings them and placing them with flowers on a new embroidered cloth for reverence.The dead are buried for 3 years and then their bones taken out for cleaning on Dead Day which is celebrated on November 1 and November 2. Since the cemetery is in the Mayan town, the ritual may has its roots in the Mayan civilization where ancestors were often mummified. Over the years, as technology has developed and entered into our bodies themselves, items like steel hip joints have entered into the remains and must be cleaned differently from the bones.According to the ritual, the main reason behind this practice is said to help deal with the pain of death and keep the family together — is also tied to a belief that a poorly taken care of relative can "become angry and wonder lost through the streets." There is some concern that as the young generation of Pomuch becomes more modernized they will abandon the tradition of cleaning the dead.
