Karachi: Pakistan's largest city Karachi and several areas of Sindh province were plunged into darkness early today, leaving over 20 million people without electricity due to a massive power failure.

The outage was caused when Guddu-Dadu transmission line tripped due to a technical fault.

"The breakdown was caused by a technical fault in one of the high voltage transmission lines supplying electricity to Karachi from the national grid," said Ahmad Faraz, Spokesman of Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation of K-Electric.

"Power failure happened around 3.45 am when 500 KV power line got tripped due to moisture," he said.

Karachi, a city of over 23 million people, and Hyderabad and Jamshoro districts plunged into darkness due to power failure.

In Karachi, the worst hit areas were Nazimabad, Defence, Shahra-e-Faisal, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Nursery, PECHS, Shah Faisal Colony, Landhi, New Karachi, Clifton, Landhi, Korangi etc.

Pakistan's power line system is old and needs repair as well replacement.

Recently, large swaths of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces faced major power breakdown after the national grid system collapsed due to low frequency ratio.
