Jetusalem: Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that Hamas knows well that Israel will not tolerate a "drizzle" of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, according to a statement released by the PM's office.

Addressing an assembly of local council leaders ahead of the Jewish New Year, Netanyahu said that Israel's military operation in Gaza over the summer had dealt Hamas "the worst blow" since the Islamist group's establishment in the late 1980s, Xinhua reported.

"We hit Hamas in a way it never expected. We struck the breeders of terrorism and its commanders, and destroyed the terror tunnels they used to carry out mass-casualty attacks against Israeli civilians. This is our policy, and it is strong and stable," he added.

Defence Minister Moshe Ya'alon echoed Netanyahu's remarks, vowing that the government will not allow intermittent rocket and mortar fire to become routine again.
