Lindhout told a group of students in 2011 that a dozen men emerged from where they had been hiding behind a car, AK47s fixed on their vehicle, as they travelled towards a refugee camp.
The kidnappers set a $3million ransom for the pair, who decided their best chance of survival would be to convert to Islam.
But after becoming Muslims, they were forced to sleep in separate rooms.
Lindhout said she suffered regular abuse at the hands of her captors.
