What PM Modi says during G20 Summit | POINTERS

At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro today, I spoke on a topic which is very important for the future of the planet- Sustainable Development and Energy Transition. I reiterated India’s steadfast commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda. Over the past decade, India has undertaken numerous initiatives in sectors like housing, water resources, energy and sanitation which have contributed to a more sustainable future.

We in India, guided by our cultural values, have been the first to fulfil the Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule. Building on this, we are accelerating towards more ambitious goals in sectors like renewable energy. Our effort of the world’s largest solar rooftop programme is an example of the same.

Lula urges G20 leaders to move faster on net zero climate targets

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Tuesday urged leaders of the Group of 20 major economies to accelerate their national climate targets, calling on them to reach net zero climate emissions five to 10 years ahead of schedule. Opening the last session of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Lula suggested countries bring forward their targets to reach climate neutrality by 2040 or 2045, instead of 2050 as Brazil and many others have pledged. "We have to do more and better," Lula said, noting that this is likely the world's warmest year on record as climate disasters such as flooding and droughts become more frequent and intense. "There is no time to lose," he added.

G20 Summit: Brazil's Lula calls on G20 to raise climate targets

    • “While we are here, our representatives are in Baku negotiating a new goal to have private financing. There is no ambition that can sustain without implementation. In Paris we talked about a hundred billion dollars a year, which the developed world did not meet. Today, we talk about trillions," said Brazilian President Lula.
    • “Even if we don't cut down any more trees, the Amazon will continue to be threatened if the rest of the world does not fulfill its mission to contain global warming. The oceans are another important climate regulator and a potential source of solutions. They must also be a priority object of our concerns. In the fight for survival there is no room for denialism and misinformation," he added

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday attacks on Russia's Bryansk region by Ukraine with US missiles was a clear signal that the West wanted to escalate the conflict. "Without the Americans, it is impossible to use these high-tech missiles, as Putin has repeatedly said," Lavrov said. Lavrov said he hoped Moscow's new nuclear doctrine, in which President Vladimir Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike, would be attentively read.

G20 summit calls for more aid to Gaza, an end to war in Ukraine

Leaders of the world's 20 major economies gathered once again on Tuesday with a lighter schedule after they issued a joint declaration the night before. The document, which includes calls for a global pact to combat hunger, more aid for Gaza and the end of the war in Ukraine, was heavy on generalities and short on specifics. The joint statement was endorsed by group members but fell short of complete unanimity. It also called for a future global tax on billionaires and for reforms allowing the eventual expansion of the U.N. Security Council beyond its five permanent members. At the start of the three-day meeting which formally ends Wednesday, experts doubted Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva could convince the assembled leaders to hammer out any agreement at all in a gathering rife with uncertainty over the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, and heightened global tensions over wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.
