Islamabad, Jan 10: A Pakistani parliamentary committee has asked the police to conduct a DNA test to ascertain the facts over the alleged rape of a five-year-old Hindu girl by a Muslim man, a daily said Thursday.
The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Human Rights expressed dissatisfaction over the slow progress in the investigation of the alleged rape, the Dawn reported.
The committee directed Ghulam Hyder, deputy inspector general of Mirpurkhas district in Sindh province, to conduct the DNA test.
The minor Hindu girl was allegedly raped Dec 2, 2012 in a village close to Umerkot in Sindh.
The case was brought to the attention of the National Assembly by member Nawab Yousaf Talpur, and was forwarded to the Standing Committee on Human Rights.
The incident has triggered protests and rallies in many towns of Sindh. Reports said police were attempting to save the accused by exploiting loopholes in the legal process.
The accused has been arrested and is now in judicial custody, the Dawn said.
Hyder said a "confessional statement from the culprit has been recorded" but investigation was taking some time because the chemical examiner's report was unclear.
He said there was still confusion whether the girl was raped or the incident was an attempted rape.
"The DNA test will clear all confusions," the police official said.
