Beirut: Czech Republic Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said on Wednesday that his country is willing to help Lebanon to offer assistance to the Syrian refugees that are taking shelters in the country.
Following a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil, Zaoralek told reporters that the two ministers discussed the Czech government's contributions, through the European Union, to help Lebanon in handling the burden of the Syrian war, Xinhua reported.
He said the Czech Republic will follow up on its plan to provide the Syrian refugees in Lebanon with humanitarian aids, adding that it is very important to quickly find a suitable political solution to the Syrian crisis.
According to the UN Higher Commission for Refugees, there are currently more than 1.2 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and the number may reach 1.5 million by the year-end.
Last week, Lebanon's Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbas said his country would accept all Syrian travelers, but refugees.
He stressed that "Lebanon is no longer able to host anymore", adding that "there were many border areas on the Syrian side that were free of clashes and could host refugees."
The minister said the cases of existing refugees in Lebanon "would be regularly examined to make sure those who do not meet the criteria for refugee status were removed from the UN list."
