The Modi government has tabled the Farm Bills -- the Farmer's Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 -- in the Rajya Sabha despite strong protests from several farmers union and Opposition parties including the Congress Party. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar otoday introduced the bill in Rajya Sabha.

The bills are facing staunch opposition from farmer bodies as well as from within the ruling coalition. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the food processing minister from the Shiromani Akali Dal party, resigned from the government last week. 

Meanwhile, the total number of global coronavirus cases has surpassed 30.9 million, including more than 961,000 fatalities.

    Hong Kong bars Air India flights till Oct 3 after passengers test positive for coronavirus

    Hong Kong has banned Air India flights from Sunday to October 3 after a few passengers on its flight on Friday tested positive for COVID-19 post arrival, a senior government official said on Sunday. Air India passenger flights were barred from landing in Hong Kong between August 18 and August 31 after 14 passengers on its Delhi-Hong Kong flight of August 14 tested positive for COVID-19 post arrival.

    Passengers from India can arrive in Hong Kong only if they have a COVID-19 negative certificate from a test done within 72 hours prior to the journey, according to rules issued by the Hong Kong government in July.

    Moreover, all international passengers are required to undergo a post-flight COVID-19 test at the Hong Kong airport.

    Heavy rains lash Kerala, red alert in eight districts

    Heavy rains continued to lash Kerala with eight districts put under red alert on Sunday and the IMD sounding Orange alert in ten districts for Monday. The weatherman said that a low pressure area had formed over North East Bay of Bengal and Neighbourhood on Sunday morning.

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Sunday.

    Meanwhile, the IMD has issued Orange alert on Monday for the districts of Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

    Asked states to ensure swift processing of frontline health workers' insurance claims: Ashwini Choubey

    The Centre has, through a number of letters, asked states and Union Territories to ensure swift processing of insurance claims under the 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package' to frontline health workers fighting COVID-19, Rajya Sabha was informed on Sunday. The 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme for Health Workers Fighting COVID-19' was announced on March 30.

    This central scheme provides an insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh to healthcare providers, including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact and care of COVID-19 patients and therefore at risk of being infected. It also includes accidental loss of life on account of contracting COVID-19.

    Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey said in a written reply that regular video conferences have been held with states along with the representatives of the New India Assurance Co. Ltd to coordinate and expedite the submission of claims so that the benefit reaches the bereaved family in time.
