Coronavirus Updates: May 15, 2020 | As it happened

1,576 new COVID-19 positive cases and 49 deaths reported in Maharashtra today, taking the number of active cases to 21,467 and deaths to 1,068. Total positive cases stand at 29100. A total of 6,564 patients have been recovered/discharged in the state so far.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has declared that except in four zones in Hyderabad, there are no coronavirus active cases in the State.

141 new COVID-19 positive cases and 5 deaths have been reported in Pune district today. Total positive cases stand at 3567 in the district and death toll is at 186.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has written to Mumbai Cricket Association to temporarily hand over the possession of Wankhede Stadium to BMC, for use by emergency staff of BMC and to quarantine COVID-19 positive but asymptomatic patients.

30 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Jammu and Kashmir - 9 from Jammu division and 21 from Kashmir division. The total number of cases in the Union Territory is now at 1013, including 489 active cases, 513 recovered and 11 deaths.

Noida reported four new coronavirus cases in which each one case has been detected in Noida sector-5 and sector-12. While, two people tested COVID-19 positive in village Nagla.

Krishna Verma posted as DSP, Special Branch in Srikakulam division found dead in a suspicious condition at his residence in Visakhapatnam today. The cause of death will be known after the investigation. Further probe is on.

69 new COVID-19 cases reported in Karnataka between 5 pm yesterday and 5 pm today. Total number of cases in the state is now at 1056, including 480 discharges and 36 deaths.

Two more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Jharkhand, taking the total number of cases to 205.

13 more cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Bihar, taking the total number of cases to 1012.

NIA (National Investigation Agency) today arrested the key conspirator in the Visakhapatnam espionage case, Mohammed Haroon Haji Abdul Rehman Lakdawala (49 years) in Mumbai.

 Russia has confirmed 10,598 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total tally to 262,843, the second highest in the world, according to the country's coronavirus response centre on Friday. The death toll grew by 113 to 2,418, while 58,226 people have recovered, including 4,696 over the last 24 hours, Xinhua news agency quoted the centre as saying.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit region, confirmed 4,748 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 135,464. Russia's consumer rights and human well-being watchdog announced in a statement Friday that 256,847 people were under medical observation as of Thursday.

Over 6.4 million lab tests for COVID-19 have been conducted across the country so far, it added.

Singapore on Friday reported 793 new coronavirus cases, mostly foreign workers living in dormitories, taking the total number of infections in the country to 26,891, the health ministry said. Out of the 793 new cases, only one is a Singaporean citizen or a permanent resident (foreigner). The rest are all foreign workers residing in dormitories, the ministry said.

As of Thursday, 5,964 people have recovered from the disease since the first case was reported here on January 23. The deadly virus has claimed 21 lives so far.

With 61 new cases in the last 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district rose to 2,299, while two more patients succumbed to the
infection, a health official said on Friday.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh rose to 2157 after 57 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours, out of which 1252 have so far recovered and have been discharged, while 48 have died, the state health department said on Friday. With the latest updates, Kurnool, Guntur and Krishna districts continued to be the major hotbeds in the state. Kurnool contributed 8 out of the 57 fresh cases reported in the state. Besides, Visakhapatnam contributed 2 new cases.

The second worst-hit district, Guntur, added no new cases in the last 24 hours ending 10 am on Friday, taking the total to 404. Krishna district reported nine cases as its count rose to 360. Nellore and Chittoor districts in the red zone in Andhra, reported fourteen fresh cases each. Four other districts of the state did not report any new case, as per the bulletin.

Authorities have reported the first coronavirus case in the crowded camps for Rohingya refugees in southern Bangladesh, where more than 1 million people are sheltered. The person from the Rohingya community and a local person who lives in the Cox’s Bazar district who also tested positive have been isolated, Mahbub Alam Talukder, the country’s refugee commissioner, said Thursday.

Teams have been activated for treatment of the patients as well as tracing people they might have encountered and quarantining and testing of those contacts, Louise Donovan, a spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency, told The Associated Press. Aid workers have been warning of the potential for a serious outbreak if the virus reached the camps. The dense crowding with plastic shacks standing side by side housing up to 12 residents each mean the refugees would be dangerously exposed to the virus.

Mexico reported its largest one-day rise in coronavirus cases, with 2,409. Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell said Thursday the country is at “the most difficult” moment in the pandemic. It was the first time in Mexico that the number of new cases exceeded 2,000 in one day. In percentage terms, the 6% increase was not the biggest one-day jump.

Officials also reported 257 more deaths from COVID-19, for a total of 4,477 since the pandemic began. There have been higher one-day death tolls this week.

López-Gatell said there are “tendencies of decline” in some parts of the country. But there also are signs that hospital capacity is nearing its limit in Mexico City, the country’s hardest-hit area. The increase in cases comes four days before Monday’s scheduled partial reopening of key industries such as mining, construction and automobile assembly.

Japan's main employers have recommended a four-day work week to reduce the chances of COVID-19 transmission as companies start to reopen.

The number of COVID-19 cases has reached 4589 in Rajasthan, with 55 more people testing positive today. Number of active cases and death toll stands at 1818 and 125, respectively

In a morning update, the Health Ministry said, of the total cases at least 51,401 are active. A total of 27,920 individuals have been cured and discharged while 2,649 people lost their lives. Read More

China has gone a month without announcing any new deaths from the coronavirus. The National Health Commission reported four new cases of the virus Friday, all local cross-infections in the northeastern province of Jilin where a cluster of uncertain origin has been detected in recent days. The last time the commission reported a death was on April 14. Just 91 people remain in treatment for COVID-19 and 623 others are under isolation and monitoring for being suspected cases or for having tested positive without showing symptoms, including 11 newly detected.

In total, China has reported 4,633 deaths among 82,933 cases since the virus was first detected late last year in the central city of Wuhan.

China has maintained social distancing and bans on foreigners entering the country, but has increasingly opened up the world’s second-largest economy to allow both large factories and small businesses to resume production and dealings with customers. The government plans to hold the ceremonial parliament’s annual session later this month, but with highly limited access for journalists and others.

The total death toll due to novel coronavirus has claimed more than 31,300 lives. As of today, Italy's death toll stood at 31,368, bringing the total number of cases, including fatalities and recoveries, so far to 223,096, according to the latest data released by the country's Civil Protection Department. The number of recoveries rose to 115,288, an increase of 2,747 compared to Wednesday. Nationwide, the number of active infections fell by 2,017 to 76,440, according to the Civil Protection Department, Xinhua news agency reported.

Of those who tested positive for the coronavirus, 855 are being treated in intensive care, a decrease of 38 compared to Wednesday, and 11,453 people are hospitalized with symptoms, a decrease of 719 over the past 24 hours.

The remaining 64,132 people -- or 84 per cent of those who have tested positive -- are in isolation at home without or with only mild symptoms.
