An apparatus for ultraviolet sterilization of surfaces has been developed by Dr. BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology in Jalandhar to kill coronavirus, it was announced on Wednesday. Union Cabinet addresses the media
Union Cabinet on Wednesday addressed the media over various issues currently faced in the country. Here are some highlights:
- Union Cabinet approves a declaration of Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh as an International Airport.
- Union Cabinet approves the extension of tenure of the Commission constituted under Article 340 of the constitution to examine the issue of sub-categorization within Other Backward Classes, by 6 months - upto 31.1.2021
- Govt banks, including 1482 urban cooperative banks and 58 multi-state cooperative banks, are now being brought under supervisory powers of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), RBI's powers as they apply to scheduled banks will apply for cooperative banks as well.
- The decision to bring 1,540 cooperative banks under RBI's supervision will give an assurance to more than 8.6 crore depositors in these banks that their money amounting to Rs 4.84 lakh crore will stay safe.
- Union Cabinet has approved a scheme for interest subvention of 2% to Shishu loan category borrowers under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, outstanding as on 31st March 2020, for a period of 12 months to eligible borrowers.
- Union Cabinet approves the establishment of the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund. The government will provide 3% interest subvention to eligible beneficiaries.

Croatian PM refuses to self-isolate after brief encounter with Djokovic
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he would not self-isolate following his brief encounter with Novak Djokovic, the men’s world number one tennis player who tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. In a statement, the Croatian Public Health Institute said Plenkovic did not have to self-isolate as the risk of infection was low because he only briefly met Djokovic and was not in close contact with him. Three other players who played in Djokovic’s Adria Tour exhibition tournament in the Balkan region have also tested positive.
