Beijing: China says an emergency medical team from the government and a disaster relief team from the China Red Cross will leave for the Philippines in the coming days in response to the typhoon.

China has been under fire for a tepid response to the disaster and Wednesday's announcement comes just under two weeks after the typhoon struck, killing more than 4,000.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said that after consultation with the Philippines, an emergency medical team from the Chinese government and a disaster relief team from the Chinese Red Cross will leave in the coming days. The Chinese navy will also send a medical ship.

Hong says the first batch of rescuers from the Red Cross will leave Wednesday.

China is feuding with Manila over overlapping territorial sea claims.
