Bali: Gangster Chhota Rajan is unlikely to be deported to India from Indonesia's Bali today as the international airport here will remain closed for the entire day due to a volcanic eruption in the resort island.

The closure of the airport following the spewing of volcanic ash had forced the cancellation of Rajan's deportation to India twice. 55-year-old Rajan was scheduled to be taken to India firstly on Tuesday and then on Wednesday by a special aircraft but he continued to be in detention in Denpasar.

An Indian Police team, which arrived in Bali on Sunday, has completed all formalities for taking custody of Rajan and flying him to India. Rajan will be taken in a special aircraft, which has been brought here from India.

Yesterday, sources told India TV that Rajan will be taken to Delhi first instead of Mumbai. Rajan will remain in the custody of CBI in Delhi and the central probe agency will interrogate him to establish further links of his crime.

It should be noted that Rajan, 55, had repeatedly conveyed to Indian officials his reluctance to go to Mumbai because of threats from underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, is wanted in over 75 heinous crimes ranging from murder, extortion to smuggling and drug trafficking.

He was arrested in Bali on the basis of a Red Corner Notice from Interpol and following a tip off by Australian authorities to the police in Indonesia.

In 2000, there was an attempt on Rajan's life when his arch rival and India's most wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim's men tracked him down to a hotel in Bangkok but he managed a dramatic escape.
