Ottawa: Canada will impose restrictions on the export of technology, in relation to Arctic, deep water and shale oil exploration and extraction, to Russia, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said.

The new export restrictions will be applied under Canada's Special Economic Measures Act, Xinhua reported on Friday.

The sanctions ban the export, sale, supply or shipment of a specified list of goods to Russia, or any person in Russia, for use in deep water, Arctic, or shale oil exploration and production.

They also prohibit providing Russia, or any person in Russia, financial, technical or other services related to the prohibited goods.

Harper also announced economic sanctions and travel bans against 11 Russians from the State Duma (the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia).

"The sanctions we have taken to date, in close collaboration with our allies and partners, are putting real economic pressure on Russia to cease militarism in Ukrainian territory," said Harper.

According to the office of Canadian prime minister Friday, Harper talked with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the two leaders discussed the situation in eastern Ukraine and the need to continue to confront Russia.

Harper reiterated Canada's support to Ukraine, including measures like the provision of winterised kits and other non-lethal military equipment.
