    Will ensure Maratha community gets justice: Maharashtra CM on quota

    Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said his government was firm on giving justice to the Marathas, and the option of issuing an ordinance to restore quota for students from the community has been discussed.

    The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed implementation of the 2018 Maratha quota law of the state and referred the petitions challenging the law to a larger constitution bench.

    Rajasthan CM condoles death of Swami Agnivesh

    Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday expressed grief over the demise of social activist Swami Agnivesh.

    "My sincere condolences at the demise of Arya Samaj leader and social activist Swami Agnivesh Ji. His work towards upholding human rights and against bonded labour shall always be remembered. May God give strength to his supporters to bear his loss. May his soul rest in peace," Gehlot said in a tweet.

    Kerala CM condoles death of Swami Agnivesh

    Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday condoled the death of social activist Swami Agnivesh and said he was a voice of the oppressed. Swami Agnivesh, was suffering from liver cirrhosis for a long time and died of multi-organ failure at a Delhi hospital. He was 80.

    "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of social activist Swami Agnivesh. He was led by his conscience and all through his life remained a relentless voice for the oppressed and unheard. On behalf of the people of Kerala, I offer our deepest condolences," Vijayan tweeted.

    Karnataka govt allows opening of public libraries

    Further easing coronavirus related restrictions, the Karnataka government on Friday ordered the opening of public libraries in the state other than those in containment zones.

    By strictly following the national directives for the control of COVID-19 and the guidelines issued by the state government like thermal scanning of those entering, officials concerned should provide library service to the citizens, Principal Secretary to the state government Anjum Parvez said in an order.

    This relaxation is following the Unlock 4 guidelines, under which the government had allowed further easing of COVID restrictions, outside the containment zones.

    Odisha CM launches welfare scheme for sanitation workers

    Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched Garima, a first-of-its-kind statewide scheme for the safety and dignity of core sanitation workers.

    Coronavirus cases in Delhi

    Delhi recorded 4,266 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the tally to over 2.09 lakh, while the death toll climbed to 4,687, authorities said.

    The total number of cases in the national capital stands at 2,09,748.

    HDFC Bank looks to increase number of banking correspondents to 25,000 by March

    In a bid to expand its rural reach, the country's largest private sector lender HDFC Bank is planning to more than double the strength of its banking correspondents to 25,000 by the fiscal-end, a top official of the bank said. At present, the bank has a network of 11,000 banking correspondents.

    MoS Railways Suresh Angadi tests positive for coronavirus

    Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi said he tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday but was asymptomatic and "doing fine". "I have tested #Covid19 positive today. I am doing fine.

    Taking the advice of doctors. Requesting all those who have come in close contact with me in the last few days to monitor their health and get tested in case of any symptoms," he tweeted.

    The 65-year old Member of Lok Sabha from Belagavi constituency in Karnataka said he was asymptomatic.

    IndiGo operates over 1,700 cargo flights in 5 months

    Budget carrier IndiGo operated over 1,700 cargo charter flights, transporting over 14,300 tonnes of supplies between April 18 and September 7, which is equivalent to the total cargo handled by the carrier in the last fiscal, the airline said on Friday.

    These flights, comprising both domestic and international, were operated across 21 destinations, it said in a release.

    Congress announces names of 15 candidates for MP bypolls

    The Congress on Friday announced names of 15 candidates for the upcoming by-elections to 27 Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh. The list was issued by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Mukul Wasnik in-charge of Central
    Election Committee (CEC) with the approval of party president Sonia Gandhi, state Congress spokesman Narendra Saluja told PTI.

    The party has fielded Ravindra Singh Tomar (Dimani), Satyprakash Shekharwar (Ambah, SC), Mevaram Jatav (Gohad, SC), Sunil Sharma (Gwalior), Suresh Raje (Dabra, SC), Phul Singh Baraiya (Bhander, SC), Pragilal Jatav (Karera), Kanhaiyalal Agrawal (Bamori), Asha Dohre (Ashok Nagar, SC), Vishwanath Singh Kunjam (Anuppur, ST), Madanlal Choudhary Ahirwar (Sanchi, SC), Vipin Wankhede (Agar, SC), Rajveer Singh Baghel (Hatpipalya), Ram Kishan Patel (Nepanagar, ST) and Premchand Guddu (Sanver, SC), he said.

    The bypolls are yet to be scheduled for 27 Assembly seats, which are lying vacant after the resignation of 25 Congress MLAs, including 22 loyalists of former Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Two seats are vacant due to the death of the sitting legislators.

    Adani Green Energy posts Rs 22 cr profit for June quarter

    Adani Green Energy on Friday posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 21.75 crore for June quarter mainly on the back of higher revenues. The company had a net loss of Rs 97.44 crore in April-June 2019-20, a BSE filing said.

    Total income rose to Rs 878.14 crore in April-June 2020-21 from Rs 675.23 crore in the same period last year. The net export (of electricity) increased to 1,382 million units in the first quarter, up 24 per cent from the year-ago period.

    COVID-19 recoveries in India surge to 35,42,663

    Sixty per cent of the daily new COVID-19 recoveries in India are coming from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, which also account for 57 per cent of the new cases, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday.

    Total COVID-19 recoveries in the country have surged to 35,42,663 as on date with a total 70,880 recoveries being registered in a span of 24 hours of which Maharashtra alone contributed to more than 14,000 and Andhra Pradesh more than 10,000.

    Man arrested for threatening Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut

    A man, claiming to be a fan of actress Kangana Ranaut, was on Friday arrested from the city''s Tollygunge area for allegedly threatening Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut, police said.

    A team of Mumbai Police with the help of Kolkata Police nabbed Palash Ghosh, in his late 20s, from his Tollygunge residence in the early hours of Friday for allegedly threatening Raut, they said.

    Ghosh had allegedly threatened the Shiv Sena MP with "dire consequences" following which the Mumbai Police contacted the city cops and arrested the man.

    Odisha Minister tests positive for COVID-19

    Odisha Women and Child Development (WCD) and Mission Shakti Minister Tukuni Sahu tested positive for COVID-19. Currently, she is under home isolation. The Minister took to her Twitter handle to inform about this. “I have tested positive for COVID-19 and under home isolation now,” she wrote. 

    She further requested people who have come in contact with her in the last few days to isolate themselves and get the COVID-19 test done, if required. Till date, 18  MLAs, including Bhubaneswar (North) legislator Susant Rout, Bhubaneswar (Central) MLA Ananta Narayan Jena, Berhampur MLA Bikram Panda, Chandbali MLA Byomakesh Ray, Khandapada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik have tested positive for the virus. Besides, five Ministers, including Sushanta Singh and Arun Sahoo have contracted the virus.

    COVID-19: Thane reports 1,856 cases, 34 deaths

    With the addition of 1,856 cases, the COVID-19 tally in Thane district of Maharashtra reached 1,40,249, an official said on Friday. These cases were added on Thursday, he said. The death toll in the district rose to 3,842 as 32 patients, nine of them in Kalyan, succumbed to the infection on Thursday, the official said.
    In the last 10 days, the number of positive patients in the district has gone up from 1,25,352 to 1,40,249. The district's recovery rate is now 85.54 per cent and the mortality rate 2.74 per cent.

    UP govt reduces cost of COVID-19 test to Rs 1,600

    With the price of RTPCR test kits and reagents used for coronavirus testing coming down, the Uttar Pradesh government has reduced the charge for conducting COVID-19 test to Rs 1,600 from Rs 2,500 by all labs including those privately owned.

    "The prices of RTPCR test kits and reagents used for COVID tests have come down. Hence, the April order on pricing of the test has been amended. The maximum price of test will now be Rs 1,600," said Additional Chief Secretary Amit Mohan Prasad in an order issued on Thursday evening.

    Union minister Ramdas Athawale today met Maharashtra governor Koshiyari to demand compensation for the loss of property suffered by Kangana Ranaut. Athawale also protested the demolition of Kangana's Bandra office premises by BMC. On Wednesday, the BMC bulldozers had demolished what they called "illegal construction" construction at Kangana's Mumbai office

    "I met Maharashtra Governor today over the issue of demolition of Kangana Ranaut's property in Mumbai and demanded that she should get compensation for the loss. The way BMC carried out demolition at her property is wrong. She must get justice," Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said.

    J&K: 2 JeM militants held, arms recovered

    Security forces have arrested two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants from Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir and recovered arms, ammunition and cash from their possession, the Army said on Friday.

    "Based on a credible input, multiple joint check posts were established in Drugmulla area of Kupwara on Thursday," an army official said.

    He said two JeM militants travelling in a car were arrested late in the evening and the security forces recovered an AK rifle with ammunition, two grenades, Rs 7 lakh in cash, and other war-like stores from them.

    MSRTC adds 140 buses in MMR to cater to growing travel demand

    In view of the increased travel demand from people, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has deployed 140 additional buses in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), its top official said on Friday.
    These 140 buses are apart from the 400 that are already in operation in the region, Shekhar Channe, vice-chairman and managing director of the MSRTC told PTI.

    BREAKING: Sessions court rejects Rhea Chakraborty bail plea in drug case

    BREAKING: A sessions court in Mumbai has rejected bail plea of Rhea Chakraborty in the drugs case against her. Six people including Rhea will have to spend some more time in jail for now. Rhea's advocate Satish Mane Sinde is now likely to file an appeal in Bombay High Court. 

    More on Rhea's bail rejection: Bail pleas of Showik Chakraborty, Rhea Chakraborty, Abdul Basit, Zaid Vilatra, Dipesh Sawant & Samuel Miranda have been rejected by a special court in Mumbai.

    They were arrested by NCB in connection with drugs case.

    Telangana sees 2,426 new COVID-19 cases, 13 fatalities

    Telangana clocked 2,426 fresh COVID-19 cases and 13 related deaths, taking the aggregate to1.52 lakh in the state. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 338, followed by Rangareddy 216, Medchal Malkajgiri 172 and Nalgonda 164 districts, a government bulletin said on Friday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 10.

    With 13 more deaths, the toll mounted to 940. The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.19 lakh while32,195 are under treatment. As many as62,890 samples were tested on September 10.

    UP records single-day spike of 7,042 corona cases

    Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest single-day spike of 7,042 coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 2,92,029. Lucknow alone recorded 917 cases on Thursday. The number of deaths on Thursday was 94 pushing the death toll in the state to 4,206, according to an official bulletin. 

    Fatalities reported in the state include 11 Covid-19 deaths in Lucknow, eight in Kanpur city, six in Gorakhpur, five each in Meerut and Pilibhit, four each from Prayagraj, Varanasi, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar. The total number of active cases in the state now stands at 66,317.

    Kolkata Police commissioner tests Covid-19 positive

    Kolkata Police commissioner Anuj Sharma on Thursday tested positive for the Covid-19. He went for home isolation, sources said. Officials in Kolkata Police said that swab test sample of Sharma was sent for testing on Wednesday after the city police top cop had developed mild symptoms. The test confirmed the infection on Thursday.

    Sources said Sharma was doing well, and currently working from home. He had attended the "Police Day" programme organised at the state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday, in which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other senior officials were also present.

    Rainfall unlikely in Delhi till Tuesday: Met Dept

    The MeT department on Friday said the skies over the national capital will remain clear and no rains are likely till Tuesday.  The mercury is expected to settle around 37 degrees Celsius. 
    So far in September, the city has recorded just 20.9 mm rainfall against the normal of 66.4 mm -- a deficiency of 69 per cent. Overall, it has recorded 576.5 mm precipitation against the normal of 590.2 mm since June 1, when the monsoon season starts.

    Medium-intensity quake hits Palghar district in Maharashtra

    A medium-intensity earthquake of magnitude 3.5 hit the coastal district of Palghar in Maharashtra early Friday morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The quake occurred at 3.57 am at a depth of 10 kilometres, the NCS, a body under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said. 

    A district adjoining Gujarat and Mumbai, Palghar also houses the Tarapur Atomic Power Station units 1-4. The district has been witnessing a series of low-intensity quakes since last week
