    1,310 festival special trains to originate, terminate in South Central Railway zone

    As many as 1,310 special trains will originate and terminate in the South Central Railway (SCR) zone during the festivals of Dasara, Diwali and Chhath Puja.

    In addition to the 1,310 trains, another 456 festival special trains will pass through the railway zone, prompting the railway authorities to implement additional safety measures at all the stations.

    Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co to fill 8,500 vacant posts

    Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut on Friday said state-owned Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (MSETCL) will recruit staff to fill up 8,500 vacant posts. Most of these posts are for technicians and engineers, according to an official statement.

    It added that pointing out that the announcement was made after a meeting between MSETCL's top officials and the minister.

    The officials said there is a shortage of staff since the split of the erstwhile Maharashtra State Electricity Board into four companies.

    As per the statement, MSETCL Chairman Dinesh Waghmare said the vacancies are creating a burden on the existing workforce and also creating industrial tensions as the trade unions have become aggressive about filling up the vacancies.

    Raut said the youth in the state is languishing due to unemployment and the new job opportunities would bring hope in their lives, as per the statement.

    The recruitment will be for 6,750 vacant posts of technical cadre and about 1,762 engineers, the statement said.

    Intensify action against pollution-causing activities: Delhi LG to agencies

    Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal directed agencies to intensify their action against pollution-causing activities in the national capital as the city's air quality dipped to the 'very poor category' on Friday, an official said.

    The official said the lieutenant governor asked concerned officials to take action against local factors such as garbage burning and others contributing to the city's air pollution.

    Baijal also directed them to ensure installation of anti-smog guns and taking other measures to reduce pollution level in the national capital.

    India to operate first VBM flight to Wuhan on Oct 30

    Air India will operate its flight to Wuhan on October 30, the first after the central Chinese city from where the coronavirus initially emerged in December was officially declared safe from the virus in June and all curbs were lifted.

    A Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) flight would be operated from Delhi-Wuhan sector on October 30, the Indian Embassy in Beijing announced on Friday.

    RBI board holds review meet to take stock of economic situation, other challenges

    Amid the uncertainties created by the coronavirus pandemic, the Reserve Bank's central board on Friday held a meeting to discuss, among other things, the economic situation and other challenges. The meeting, which was held through video conferencing, also deliberated on the issues concerning financial stability in the present context.

    "The board reviewed the current economic situation, continued global and domestic challenges and various areas of operations of the Reserve Bank.
    The board also discussed the working of sub-committees of the central board and the local boards and deliberated on the aspects related to financial stability in the present milieu," the RBI said in a release.

    Apart from RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and other central bank functionaries, the meeting was attended by N Chandrasekaran, Ashok Gulati, Manish Sabharwal, Prasanna Kumar Mohanty, Dilip S Shanghvi, Satish K Marathe, S Gurumurthy, Revathy Iyer and Sachin Chaturvedi.

    The finance ministry was represented by Tarun Bajaj, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs and Debasish Panda, Secretary, Department of Financial Services.

    It was the 585th meeting of the RBI Central Board.

    Depression to bring heavy rains over northeastern states: IMD

     Depression over the Bay of Bengal will bring heavy rains on Friday to the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Assam and Meghalaya, the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

    The IMD said the depression is very likely to cross West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) over the Sundarbans on Friday.

    COVID-19: Singapore, Germany agree on green lane travel

    Singapore and Germany have agreed to establish a reciprocal green lane, allowing direct flights between the two countries for essential business and official purposes.

    Eligible applicants for travel will have to abide by the COVID-19 prevention and public health measures mutually agreed by the two sides, foreign ministries of the two countries said in a joint statement on Friday.

    "The reciprocal green lane will enable essential travel for business or official purposes, via direct flights between both countries," the statement said.

    Gold futures gain on spot demand

    Gold prices on Friday rose by Rs 59 to Rs 50,825 per 10 gram in futures trade as speculators created fresh positions on firm spot demand. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold contracts for December delivery traded higher by Rs 59, or 0.12 per cent, at Rs 50,825 per 10 gram in a business turnover of 13,626 lots.

    Fresh positions built up by participants led to the rise in gold prices, analysts said. Gold prices traded 0.35 per cent higher at USD 1,911.30 per ounce in New York.

    Body of 19-year-old man found near drain in Noida

    The body of a 19-year-old man was found dumped in bushes in Uttar Pradesh's Noida on Friday, with police launching an investigation into the case, officials said. The body was found in the morning near a drain in Sector 32, under Sector 24 police station limits, by locals who alerted police about it, they said.

    "The deceased has been identified as Ashok, who lived in the slums in Sector 9 here. His family has been informed about it," a police spokesperson said.

    The cause of his death is yet to be ascertained and the body has been sent for post-mortem, the spokesperson said. Further proceedings are underway,

    Coronavirus vaccine free for poor in MP: CM

    Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced that Covid-19 vaccine, when available, will be administered free of cost to the poor in the state. Chouhan said: "Since the time Covid-19 vaccine trials started in India, there has been one discussion among the poor people -- 'whether we will be able to afford the vaccine?' Today, I want to make it clear that every poor person in Madhya Pradesh will get the vaccine free of cost. We will win this battle."

    The BJP poll manifesto has promised free Covid-19 vaccine to people in Bihar, following which other states have also joined in the chorus.

    Data protection: Parliament's joint panel summons Facebook, Twitter

    A joint committee of Parliament on Friday issued summons to Facebook in order to seek its "oral evidence" on the issues of data protection and privacy. Twitter too is said to have been directed for appearance next week. The joint committee led by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi has 20 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

    Airtel Africa's Jul-Sep net profit down 8.8%

    Airtel Africa on Friday reported a fall of 8.8 per cent in its net profit on a year on year (YoY) basis at $88 million for the quarter ended September. The company's revenue for the period under review was $965 million compared with $844 million earned during the July-September quarter of the last financial year.

    In a statement, the company said that its customer base grew by 12.0 per cent to $116.4 million during the quarter. Raghunath Mandava, CEO of Airtel Africa, said: "The first half of our fiscal year included the peak impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the countries where we operate in, as lockdown measures were swiftly implemented to stem the initial spread of the contagion."

    vTripura records 145 fresh COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths

    Tripura reported at least 145 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, pushing the tally to 30,070, while the death toll rose to 336 with five fatalities, a health department official said. West Tripura district, comprising state capital Agartala, has accounted for 175 deaths, he said.

    Tripura now has 2,232 active cases, while 27,479 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty-three patients have migrated to other states, the official said. As many as 4,43,481 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the northeastern state so far, he added.

    Ballia Shooting: Police recover weapon used in crime

    The police on Friday recovered the revolver used in the shooting incident in Durjanpur village here which had left one person dead. According to police, BJP leader Dhirendra Pratap Singh, arrested for allegedly killing the man during the allotment of a ration shop in the district, revealed that he hid the weapon under a tree near his house after the incident. A Ballia court had on Wednesday remanded Singh in police custody for two days.

    The Karnataka government on Friday decided to reopen engineering, diploma and degree colleges that were shut for students due to the COVID-19 pandemic from November 17.

    "In a meeting that took place under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister it was decided to reopen degree college from November 17. Engineering, diploma and degree colleges will all start," Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan said.

    Maharashtra: Man held for bludgeoning colleague to death in Thane

    A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his colleague over a work-related dispute in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Friday. The incident took place on Thursday, when the Suraj Saroj, employed as a plumber, entered into an argument with supervisor Vijay Ram Ujjagir (38), an official said. During the heated exchange, the accused rained blows on the victim and bludgeoned him to death with a heavy-duty spanner, the official said.

    Moderate-intensity quake in HP

    A moderate-intensity earthquake of magnitude 2.7 shook Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district on Friday, the Meteorological Department said. There was no report of any casualty or damage to property.

    The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 5 km north-east in Chamba district, the department said, adding tremors were felt in and around the district at 12.15 pm.

    Maharashtra: Three dead, four injured in road accident

    At least three persons were killed and four others injured when a speeding state transport bus collided with a car in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district on Friday, a police official said. The incident took place near Adur village on Gaganbawda Road around 11.30 am, the official said.

    "Police have rushed to the spot and the injured have been taken to a nearby hospital," he said. Further details are awaited.

    Sensex opens at 40,773.85; up by 215.36 points

    Equity benchmark Sensex jumped over 200 points in early trade on Friday, tracking gains in index majors HDFC twins, ICICI Bank and TCS amid positive cues from global markets.

    The 30-share BSE index was trading 228.56 points or 0.56 per cent higher at 40,787.05, and the broader NSE Nifty rose 70.70 points or 0.59 per cent to 11,967.15.

    Tata Steel was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, shedding around 2 per cent, followed by Maruti, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, HDFC twins and TCS.

    On the other hand, Infosys, HCL Tech, HUL and Asian Paints were the laggards.
