Honolulu: President Barack Obama is praising a power-sharing deal reached by leaders in Northern Ireland and says it will help the country deal with issues that have plagued its past.

Northern Ireland leaders reached a deal on Tuesday following all-night talks in Belfast. The agreement allows Northern Ireland to sustain its troubled Catholic-Protestant government.

In a statement issued while the president is vacationing in Hawaii, Obama says he and Vice President Joe Biden welcome the news. He says it shows that leaders there have the will and courage to overcome issues that have divided them. He's calling it evidence there's a way for the government to succeed and benefit everyone.

Obama says he's looking forward to the deal being ratified and to the peace process continuing to advance.
