Dhaka: A statement from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday announced another nationwide strike to press for a new general election under a non-party caretaker government system, a media report said.

The 72-hour strike will start at 6 a.m. Sunday and will continue till 6 a.m. Wednesday, said the statement issued on BNP's official letterhead and signed by the party's joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, bdnews24.com reported. However, no one from the BNP confirmed the statement as authentic.

Such statements have been circulated for the last two weeks calling and extending shutdowns.

On Feb 11, a statement in Salahuddin's name announced withdrawal of a strike but party chief Khaleda Zia's office branded it "a fake".

Over 60 people have died, mostly in arson attacks, since Khaleda called an indefinite blockade Jan 5 to press for a snap election.
