A dual US-Turkish citizen, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, died on Friday after being shot in the head by Israeli troops while participating in a protest against settlement expansion in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. The U.S. State Department and Turkey's Foreign Ministry confirmed her death, with Turkey condemning the incident as "a murder by the Netanyahu government."
Eygi was critically wounded during a protest march in Beita, near Nablus, a frequent site of tensions between Israeli settlers and Palestinians. Fouad Nafaa, head of Rafidia Hospital in Nablus, stated that doctors attempted resuscitation but were unable to save her.
The Israeli military is investigating the shooting, while U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed condolences and stressed that Eygi's death is under urgent review.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said:
"We are aware of the tragic death of an American citizen, Aysenur Eygi, today in the West Bank. We offer our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
Miller added: "We are urgently gathering more information about the circumstances of her death, and will have more to say as we learn more. We have no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens."
The Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized Israel's actions, claiming the country is attempting to intimidate those who support Palestinian causes. Recent violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank has drawn condemnation from international communities, including the U.S., which has imposed sanctions on individuals linked to the attacks.
