New Delhi: New York Democratic Representative Tim Bishop has claimed that at least 40 radicalized United States citizens, who left the country to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL or ISIS), have now returned to the country and that they could pose a terrorist threat to the US.
Bishop claimed nearly 100 people travelled to the Middle East to join ISIL's ranks.
In a speech, Bishop said, “One of the concerns is the number of US citizens who have left our country to go join up with ISIS.”
“It is believed that some 40 have now returned,” Bishop added.
Currently they are under FBI attention and surveillance, he said.
According to the US State Department, up to 12,000 so-called 'foreign fighters' from 50 countries have joined with various Muslim militant groups, including those who fight alongside ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
