A suspected militant today blew up himself near a temporary camp of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Ashkona Hajj Camp area of Dhaka, Bangladeshi media said today.
RAB spokesman Mufti Mahmud Khan said that the explosion happened when security officials challenged the man as he entered the makeshift camp in Ashkona area, opposite Dhaka's international airport, Dhaka Tribune reported.
The suspect died at the scene, Khan said, adding that the identity of the deceased was being investigated.
It was not immediately known whether the blast caused any other deaths or injuries, the spokesperson said.
The attack comes only two days after terror group ISIS called for suicide attacks in Bangladesh and a day after police’s Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit conducted a raid in Chittagong’s Sitakunda where two militants of New JMB group blew themselves up to evade arrest.
RAB is an elite anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police and has been involved in identifying and pursuing those involved in terror attacks in the country.
