New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from Pakistan’s Lahore, a teenage girl was allegedly burnt alive by her mother for marrying a man of her choice.

According to a report in Express Tribune, the victim, identified as 17-year-old Zeenat, had eloped with Hassan seven days ago.

Two days later, the family coaxed the girl to come back vowing to marry her off to Hassan. But when she returned, her mother burnt her to death.

Police said that the victim’s mother has been arrested. They also said that she confessed to the crime, pouring petrol on her daughter and then torching her.

Attack on women for refusing family marriage proposals or marrying men of their choices are very common in Pakistan. Nearly 1,000 women are killed each year in the country for marrying according to their choice.

Last week, 19-year-old Maria Sadaqat was burned alive in a village outside Islamabad for refusing a marriage proposal from the family.

Before this, a girl aged between 16 and 18 was drugged, strangle and her body burnt for helping a friend to elope with her lover.
