PM Modi concludes five-day three-nation South-East Asia visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday emplaned for India after his successful conclusion of the five-day South-East Asian visit to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi during his final leg of visit of Singapore met officers and sailors of an Indian naval ship on a visit to Changi Naval Base on Saturday. PM Modi paid visit to the stealth frigate INS Satpura at the Changi Naval Base.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a rapturous welcome upon his arrival at Indian Heritage Centre. Earlier, PM Modi visited the Mariamman Temple, which is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore built in 1827, dedicated to Goddess Mariamman.
PM Modi also paid a visit to the Chulia Mosque built by the Chulia Muslim merchants from India's Coromandal Coast under the leadership of Anser Sahib. He was accompanied by Singapore Culture Minister Grace Yien. Earlier, the Prime Minister visited the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum in Singapore.
In a friendly gesture by the Singapore government, an orchid was named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate his visit to the country. This orchid was also displayed behind the head table during the banquet lunch hosted by PM Lee Hsien Loong for PM Modi. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with US Secretary of State James Mattis in Singapore. PM Modi also unveiled a plaque commemorating Mahatma Gandhi at Clifford Pier, Hotel Fullerton, in remembrance of Gandhi's immersion from the pier on March 28, 1948. He was accompanied by former Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Earlier on Friday upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace Istana, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome with a guard of honour. PM Modi also held talks with Singapore President Halimah Yacob and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Modi and Yacob exchanged views to strengthen bilateral relations and explored further cooperation in the flagship initiatives of the government. During his talks with his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong, both the leaders agreed to deepen the bilateral economic ties and build on defence cooperation as they called for a peaceful, open, and friendly maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific region. The two leaders also witnessed an exchange of Memorandums of Understanding in numerous fields, including the training of public service officials, cybersecurity, narcotics control and logistics cooperation between the two navies.
PM Modi also hailed the close defence cooperation between the two countries and welcomed the completion of the logistics agreement between the two navies. “In the coming times, dealing with cybersecurity and extremism and terrorism will be important areas of our cooperation,” the prime minister said.
Modi and Lee also exchanged views on the regional and global challenges and reiterated their principled position on maritime security and expressed commitment to ‘Rules Based’ order. The two leaders also agreed on the need to maintain an open, stable and fair international trade regime. “We also agreed for a peaceful, open, and friendly maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific region,” Modi said.
Later in the day, PM Modi visited Singapore's prestigious Nanyang Technological University and interacted with students there.During his visit to the university, six agreements were signed to strengthen academic and industry partnerships between NTU and leading Indian universities and institutions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also became the first Indian PM to deliver the keynote speech at the Shangri-La Dialogue on Saturday. During his address, PM Modi said that the future resides in the East and the region can be shaped with collective hope. He said that Singapore is an example of great excellence. “When rule prevails and oceans are open, nations prosper and Singapore is an example of it,” he said. He acknowledged that the trade in the region is growing significantly. He said that our relationship with states around oceans is expanding with exceeding pace. “Global transit routes should remain peaceful and free for all,” he said. He also spoke about India’s deepening defence ties with South East Asian economies. “With Singapore, we have the longest and uninterrupted naval exercise which has lasted for 25 years,” PM Modi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off his five-day three-nation South-East Asia visit on May 29. Earlier he had visited Indonesia and Malaysia before departing for Singapore for a three-day visit.
