An Indian-American student is part of a team from the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology that has won a coveted gaming championship in the US and will receive USD 9,000 each as scholarship money.

Shiv Chopra and his teammates, Tyler Hiu and Sean Joplin, on Saturday swept off the Minnesota team 3-0 in the finals of the Hearthstone Intercollegiate Championship, is an online digital collectible card game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment.

The championship was part of the first-ever ESPN Collegiate Esports Championships.

Some 400 college teams participated in the Hearthstone championship that started in March this year. The championship was streamed live on the Local Area Network in Houston.

“We chose an uncommon deck, focused on the match at hand, were considered the underdogs yet swept the semifinal (against Rochester Institute of Technology) and final 3-0,” a thrilled Shiv Chopra, son of the editor of an Indian community weekly, said.
