Tehran: India, Iran and Afghanistan today signed a trilateral agreement on Chabahar port.
"Today we are witnessing creation of history for the entire region," said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"In flow of capital and technology can lead to new industrial infrastructure in Chabahar," he added.
Emphasising on the positives of the signed agreement, PM Modi said, "Economic fruits of Chahbahar Agreement will expand trade, attract investment, build infrastructure, develop industry and create jobs."
"The 3-nation pact will strengthen our ability to stand in mutual support against those whose only motto is to maim and kill innocents," he added.
Earlier today, India signed 12 agreements with Iran, including a pact to operate a strategic port in Chabahar on the Persian Gulf nation's southern coast. The key trading port will open the Indian economy to central Asia, specifically Afghanistan and will bypass Pakistan.
"As friends and neighbours, we have shared interest in each other's growth and prosperity, and joys and sorrows," PM Modi said.
PM Modi said India and Iran will consult each other closely and regularly on combating threats of terrorism, radicalism, drug trafficking and cyber crime.
The inking of a commercial contract to build and run the strategic port of Chabahar will help India gain a foothold in Iran and win access to Afghanistan, Russia and Europe, thus circumventing Pakistan, Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is also in Tehran, said.
