Germany has taken initiative to include Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the European Union. Germany has approached many other countries to put Masood Azhar in the list of Global Terrorists in the European Union, diplomatic sources told news agency PTI on Tuesday
Germany was in touch with several member nations of the European Union. If Germany's initiative succeeds, the assets of JeM chief will be seized in 28 countries of the EU, it would also impose a travel ban on Pulwama terror attack accused to member countries. China had vetoed the initiative to designate Azhar as a global terrorist in the United Nations.
Germany has proposed a ban on Azhar by the European Union. But so far there is no resolution on the issue has been moved yet, diplomatic sources said.
They said that the proposal will be passed only after the support of all the 28 countries of the European Union (EU) to ban the Pakistan-based terrorist as the bloc decides on such issues under the principle of consensus.
On March 15, France imposed financial sanctions on Masood Azhar. France has said that he will work with the other EU member countries to put Jaish-e-Mohammad chief on the list of people and organisations involved in terrorist activities of the EU.
The decision by France came two days after China had vetoed Azhar on the fresh initiative to declare Azhar a global terrorist by the Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the UNSC, a ban is proposed on JeM chief. The proposal was moved by France, the UK and the US, in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. JeM took responsibility for the Pulwama attack.
Fourteen out of 15 members of the UN Security Council supported the proposal, but China was the only country that did not support the proposal.
