Araria (Bihar), Aug 9: A woman in Bihar's Araria district tried to sell off her eight-year-old daughter for Rs 62 to a Nepalese couple.
Shannu Khatun, the destitute woman who had sold her eight-month-old son to a couple from Nepal last month, did a repeat act with her but this time the police managed to rescue the child.
The girl, found at the India-Nepal border in Bihar's Araria district, told the police her mother had a talk with a person, also from Nepal, a few days ago and she was asked to accompany him.
“The man told me to address him as papa and gave me biscuits and other eatables. I had been without food for two days,” she told the police.
Shannu was vague in her reply when asked whether she had sold her daughter.
“I cannot provide food to my children and I see no hope,” the mother said, adding that the assurances of financial assistance by the administration turned out to be vacuous and she, along with her two children, was left to fend for herself.
When Shannu sold off her son for R62.50, it was the daughter who had revealed the matter to the police.
Araria superintendent of police Shivdeep Wamanrao Lande confirmed the incident.
The girl has been handed over to the district child welfare committee.
