24-year-old Renu, married to Satwik Gulati, son a noted textile businessman of Chandigarh, committed suicide by setting herself on fire in front of their house in Sector 19 on Sunday.

According to Renu's mother Usha, Satwik was involved in a love affair with Renu for the last four years but the Gulati family was unwilling to accept her as their daughter-in-law. The two had gone through a court marriage, Renu's mother said.

On Saturday evening, when Satwik came to Usha's house, Renu again tried to persuade him to take her to their home as his wife, but Satwik refused, said her mother. Instead he threatened to ‘expose' her by circulating her nude photographs to the neighbours. He even threatened to eliminate her, said Usha.

On Sunday morning, Usha said, Renu keyed something on her laptop, and rode a scooter to the Gulatis' residence. As the Gulatis refused to take her in, Renu took out some petrol from the scooter, poured it on her body and set herself on fire. The neighbours tried to save her, but by then she was critically burnt. A person came out of the Gulati residence after some time and rang up the police. Renu was sent to PGI, where she succumbed to her burns.

PGI doctors said, Renu had suffered 80 per cent burns. Before her death, Renu was saying: “Mama, forgive me. Satwik has cheated me. I am completely broken but don't spare Satwik after my death. See that he gets his due punishment.”

Renu's mother Usha alleged that soon after the incident, while Renu was in PGI,  Satwik came with a servant to her house and took away the laptop which contained photographs of their court marriage.

Police say they are investigating. So far, nobody has been arrested.
