Weather Updates: Rains lashed several parts of the country late Sunday night triggering landslides in North India while is expected India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Himachal Pradesh for the next two days. Meanwhile, the Yamuna River was expected to recede below the danger mark, however, it touched 205.94 metres level, still above the danger mark on Monday. Moreover, the Ganga crossed the danger mark in Devprayag and the warning level in Haridwar due to the heavy release of water from the dam on the Alaknanda River. The number of fatalities in North India is on the rise as the region continues to be battered by torrential rains. Among all the affected states, Himachal Pradesh remains the hardest hit, with 117 reported deaths in the state.

A woman and a girl, who went to bathe in the east Nayar river on Monday, were washed away in its strong current in Uttarakhand's Pauri district. Satpuli Sub-Collector Sandeep Kumar said at around 6 am, the two had left their homes to perform 'Jalabhishek' on the Shivling at Dangleshwar Mahadev Temple. It is located on the Satpuli-Dudharkhal motorway, which is a kilometre away from here. He said before going to the temple, both of them entered the east Nayar river to take a bath but after slipping into deeper waters they were swept away by the strong current.

Himachal govt enhances relief aid for disaster-hit families
In a relief to the victims of the recent landslides, flash floods and cloudburst triggered by heavy monsoon rains in the state, the Himachal Pradesh government Monday enhanced the compensation for several categories. “Financial assistance will be provided to the families affected by landslides, flash floods and cloudbursts which occurred from July 7 to 15, under special norms”, said Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in a statement issued here. Sukhu had announced assistance of Rs 1 lakh to affected families on July 11, saying the government will make changes to the relief manual for enhancing the relief aid.

Four people drown in flooded Yamuna in Faridabad
Owing to the flood in the national capital, four people drowned here in separate incidents in the last two days, police said on Monday. Three bodies were recovered on Sunday evening while one body was fished out from the flooded Yamuna on Monday, they added. The first incident took place when two brothers Darshan Singh and Manga Singh, who were residing at a relief camp here for flood-hit families, went to their farm in Latipur village here to check on their cattle on Sunday evening, the police said.

One killed in rain-induced landslide in Nagaland
One person died and another was injured on Monday after a rain-induced landslide occurred at a construction site in Nagaland's Kohima district, an official said. The incident happened in the Meriema area when construction labourers were working at the site, he said. Monsoon has wreaked havoc in the northeastern state as five people have died due to rockslides and drowning, according to data during the period between June 11 and July 17.

Man drowns in Mandli lake in Bhayander
A 30 year old man drowned in a lake in Bhayander in Thane district on Monday, a civic official said. The man, identified as Daniel Das, slipped while sitting at the edge of Mandli lake and drowned, the official said. His friend raise an alarm and a fire brigade team fished out Das' body a little after 7:30pm, he said. A case has been registered, a police official said.

Taking selfies near Yamuna, Hindon can be fatal: Noida DM urges 72-hour caution
Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma on Monday urged people to take caution over the next 72 hours and stay away from venturing near Yamuna and Hindon rivers, saying activities like taking selfies can turn fatal. Verma said the level of water in Yamuna has come down in the past two days but the weather department has issued an alert for the next 72 hours predicting rain in mountains in the north and in the adjoining state of Haryana. “In view of this situation, there is also a chance of water level rising in Yamuna and Hindon. The district administration has issued a warning for the next 72 hours. It is advisable that people and villagers living near the rivers take caution and stay at safe locations,” he said.

Death toll in rain-related incidents in Haryana rises to 34
Four more deaths in rain-related incidents were reported in Haryana on Monday, taking the death toll to 34, according to state government data. The state was lashed by heavy rains recently, leading to flooding in various districts. As many as 1,378 villages and 1.67 lakh hectares of crop area have been affected, the data updated at 5 pm stated. A total of 6,477 people have been evacuated from the affected areas, it stated. As many as 3,078 of those evacuated are staying in 41 relief camps set up in the state.

Seven dead in rain-related incidents in UP in last 24 hours
Seven people were killed in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours, the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner said in a statement issued here on Monday. According to the statement, five persons died by drowning -- two in Ghazipur, and one each in Etawah, Jalaun and Kanpur Dehat -- while one died due to snake-bite in Kanpur Dehat, and another person died "due to excess rainfall". According to the irrigation department, water level is above the danger level for Ganga in Budaun and Yamuna in Mathura.

Delhi: Yamuna water level touches 205.94 metres, still above danger mark
The water level of the Yamuna reached 205.94 metres at 6 pm on Monday and remained above the danger mark of 205.33 metres, officials said. According to a Central Water Commission (CWC) forecast, the water level in the river is expected to touch 206.1 metres by 9 pm. The water level of the Yamuna was recorded at 205.58 metres at 9 am. It rose to 205.92 metres at 4 pm. The level of the Yamuna breached the previous record of 207.49 metres and the 208-metre mark on July 12.

Delhi floods: Cong says Rs 10,000 compensation 'too little'
A day after the Kejriwal government announced a financial aid of Rs 10,000 each to the flood-affected families, the Delhi Congress said the compensation was "too little". The party demanded that the Delhi government forms a high-level committee to assess the losses of the flood-hit people here. Addressing a press conference here, Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary said, "The Rs 10,000 compensation announced by the Kejriwal government is too little for those affected." Delhi floods: Affected school students can attend classes without books, uniforms temporarily
Children who lost their uniforms and books in the recent floods in the national capital will be allowed to attend classes without it, until new sets of uniforms and textbooks are arranged for them, a statement said. "All the Heads of government schools are hereby directed to ensure that all the flood affected students are provided emotional and moral support to overcome the distress caused by the losses in recent flood," a Directorate of Education (DoE) circular said. "They are directed to allow these students to attend the school even without uniform and textbooks until new sets of uniform and textbooks are arranged," it said.

Heavy rainfall predicted for parts of Andhra over next five days
The Amaravati Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam in the next five days from July 17 to July 21. The Met department has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places over north coastal parts of the state, Yanam (part of Union Territory of Puducherry) and south coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next five days. "A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over Northwest Bay of Bengal within 48 hours," said a Met official in a press release issued on Monday.
