Kolkata: The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of an incident at the NRS Medical College Hospital in which a newborn fell on the floor and died as mother was forced to walk to labour room.
A pregnant woman Satabdi Ghosh was admitted to the hospital on Friday for delivery but instead of taking her to labour room by a trolley or stretcher, she was forced to walk.
In a letter to the state health secretary, a bench of the rights body comprising Justice A K Ganguly and member S N Roy directed to conduct an inquiry into the incident by a senior responsible doctor and submit report to the commission with special comments within two weeks.
The rights body also held responsible the NRS Medical College Hospital authorities for the death of the newborn on November 9, WBHRC registrar Rabindranath Samanta told PTI.
Going through media reports, the rights body described the incident as “callousness on the part of hospital authority”, while directing the state government for a probe.
