At least eight people were killed and three injured after a vehicle fell into a gorge in Betalghat, Nainital, Uttarakhand on Monday night.
"Eight people died on the spot when the pickup vehicle fell into a 200-foot-deep gorge while three people were seriously injured," said Betalghat police station incharge Anish Ahmed.
Among the dead, seven people were Nepali nationals and one Indian - Rajendra Kumar - who was driving the vehicle, he added.
As soon as information about the incident was received, officials from Betalghat police station reached the spot. They launched a search operation with the help of local villagers.
After the rescue, the bodies of all eight victims were pulled out of the ditch. A search operation is being conducted by the police in the entire area.
"Late in the night, 10 labourers from Mallagaon in Unchakot were going towards Haldwani after finishing their work. During this time, their vehicle went out of control and fell into a ditch more than 200 feet deep, in which eight people died on the spot," the official said.
