Kolkata, April 7: Trinamool Congress councillor Sambhunath Kow, the prime accused in the murder of party leader Adhir Maity in March, was yesterday remanded to police custody till April 17 by a court after being brought back to the city.

Kow was arrested early Friday from Maturi village in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.

He was brought here on transit remand earlier in the day and taken to a state-run hospital for medical check-up before a round of interrogation at the city police headquarters, Lal Bazar.

Kow had been on the run since March 20, when Maity was killed during a clash by miscreants allegedly led by the councillor over a land dispute at Mathpukur in the city's eastern fringes.

The incident had led to a political furore and hours after the tragedy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered Kow's arrest.
