New Delhi, March 15: Indian securitymen will soon be asking air passengers to take off their shoes for checking before boarding to prevent incidents of plane hijacks.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has conducted a pilot project towards this end at Delhi Airport's terminal 1D, reports Times of India.

The BCAS is now examining the possibility of implementing this procedure at all major Indian airports.

Under the new procedure, passengers will be asked to take off all metal objects, including shoes, before passing through metal detectors for frisking.

Taking off shoes and belts is presently in vogue at all European and US airports. Passengers in Europe and the US take off their shoes and put the footwear along with cabin baggage in the same tray for checking.

In India, in view of religious and social considerations, passengers may be unwilling to put their shoes with cabin baggage in the same tray. For shoes, separate trays will have to be arranged.
