New Delhi: Following is the timeline of how Damini, the braveheart fought against death till the end: December 16, 2012: Damini (name changed), a paramedic student, watches a movie with her friend in Delhi's Saket mall and heads home around 9 pm. She and her friend reach Munirka in an auto, from where they boarded an illegal chartered bus to reach home. Inside the bus, six drunk men, including the driver, first taunt her and then use an iron rod to beat her friend, who tries to defend her, unconscious. They then rape and torture the young woman for over 40 minutes. One of the rapists inserts an iron rod into her private parts, irretrievably damaging her intestines.In an attempt to hide their crime they strip the woman and her friend and throw them, naked and unconscious, out of the bus near Mahipalpur. They are discovered by pedestrians, police was called in and the two were taken to Safdarjung Hospital. December 17: The police begin their investigations. Using CCTV footage and other clues, they identify four of the rapists. Meanwhile her doctors disclose the extents of the woman's horrific injuries.December 18: The first protests begin. Jawaharlal Nehru University students stage protest in Munirka. In Parliament, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj calls for death penalty to rapists and Jaya Bachchan makes an emotional speech. December 20: Students protest outside Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit's house. They try to storm the police barricade, chased away by Delhi police in the first of many such clashes. Damini's friend gives his statement to police. December 21: Damini continues to be critical. Her friend identifies Mukesh, one of the accused, at Tihar jail. One more of the six are caught by the police. December 22: Protests escalate near India gate and upto Rashtrapati Bhavan, where thousands assembly and protest peacefully. December 23: Protests continue. Some elements begin to attack the police barricade and damage some vehicles. Delhi police retaliate with water cannons, tear gas and indiscriminate lathi charges. The reaction leads to chaos around India Gate and causes a severe backlash against the police. A police constable, Subhash Tomar is found collapsed at the scene of the protests. Police immediately arrest eight protestors for assaulting him. December 24: The infamous 'Theek Hai' day. After demands by the protestors to be addressed by the leader of the nation, PM Manmohan Singh makes a statement on TV. He asks protestors to go home and assures them that measures would be taken to improve the safety of women in the country. His lackluster statement quickly passes out of memory. However, as he ended his speech, he asks the question 'Theek Hai?' (Was it fine?) to the technicians off-screen. This part of his speech is accidentally broadcast and raises fresh protests and a stream of comments as to why the entire situation was 'Not fine'. Meanwhile two of the accused are produced in a Delhi court where they ask to be hanged for their crimes. December 25: Damini appeared to be getting better with her doctor hoping for an optimistic outcome despite having to remove almost all of her small intestine due to gangrene. She manages to give a statement to a magistrate. This statement lead to an ugly political spat with CM Sheila Dikshit complaining to Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde that the police were interfering with the process. The Delhi constable who was found collapsed at the scene of the protests on December 23, Subhash Tomar, dies. December 26: The protests continue in Delhi and only get larger. Constable Tomar is cremated with full state honours - a rare service for a constable and seen as Delhi police making a point. December 27: Damini is airlifted to Singapore where she remains critical in the ICU of Mount Elizabeth Hospital. The Delhi police, along with other paramilitary forces, clamp down on the capital in a desperate attempt to stop the protests. Police stop metro services, close roads and essentially turn the heart of the capital of India into a fortress, as Russian President Vladimir Putin was visiting Delhi. . December 28: Despite the efforts of the Delhi police the protests continue. Damini's condition deteriorates further. Her doctors in Singapore announce that she is suffering from multiple organ failure and is 'extremely critical'. There were hopes that the super-specialty hospital might yet save her life. December 29: At around 2:15 am IST, Damini passes away.
